PRECEDENTS
CHRISTO & JEANNE-CLAUDE
WRAPPED REICHSTAG (BERLIN, 1971-95)

What do YOU respond to when looking at what they do?

I really like how these installations created by Christo and Jeanne-Claude are accessible to the public free of charge

How does it make you feel?

It makes us as viewers reevaluate our perception and relationship with certain spaces, encouraging a new perspective.

Is it inspiring? Why?

I find this work really inspiring as it focuses on how they worked with scale. I found it really intriguing how they tackled such large scale monumental structures and landscapes, and challenged their boundaries.

What did you learn from their process that you could use in your own comms work?

I like how they documented their projects through photography and film. I found it interesting how they captured the repetitive process of each installation created.

How is iteration and repetition used by these artists over their lifetimes

Christo and Jeanne-Claude frequently use repeated simple elements to create visually appealing work. The wrapping of buildings and landmarks is a new and unexpected piece of work that people can interact with. Alot of their projects share common themes, such as wrapping, draping and obsuring.

WRAPPING, PHOTOGRAPHING & DRAWING
STACK, WRAP AND COVER OBJECTS

I decided to cover objects and wrap them in a range of materials. I used tissue paper, clay, meshed material and mesh wire to create my models.

TRANSFORMING OBJECTS INTO DIGITAL ARTEFACTS - 3 ABSTRACT FORMS

How does you wrapping material or objects come preloaded with conceptual weight?

I think that my wrapped materials are high conceptual weight as they explore more complex and thought-provoking ideas. This allows viewers to delve deeper into interpretations.

How does what you've used add conceptual depth to the object?

Through using tissue paper, clay and a mesh wired material I was able to convey some conceptual ideas.

SKETCHES OF MODELS

I created threes iteration in regard to the reference Christo and Jeanne-Claudes created named "Wrapped Reichstag". For my first iteration I used clay and bent it into an abstract shape I then covered it in a wired material as it gave an intriguing assembly. For iteration 2, I kept on the theme of clay but tried using a soft clay this time as it was easier to mold, I then layered it with wire again which allowed for an effective outlook. For iteration 3, I also used the soft clay and molded into a tunnel like shape. I covered it in textured white mesh allowing for a draping effect.

REFLECTION

Does this work fit in with a concept or idea you have?

I believe that this work could fit with the concept and ideas I have. The draping and wrapping of large-scale installations are really transformative pieces of art that attract a wide variety of people. I found it interesting how these installations leave behind a lasting impression for the viewers which is something I'd like to emulate in my concept.

Can you expand it into interior relationship?

These interiors I have created people are able to move through, in and around. They are quite flexible and allow for movement.

twisted cube surrounded by zinc armour forms the State Gallery of Austria, designed by Marte Marte Architecten in the town of Krems.

The art gallery's form is created by a stack of square floor plates that have been rotated around two concrete cores as they move up the building, twisting to face the Danube River.

What techniques are they using to communicate their work?

To communicate their idea, they use interesting forms and shapes to illustrate and capture the intricate design.

Can you find it on their website to further research it?

There is some research on their website which describes the materials used to create the building. This will help me further develop my project as I can emulate the materials in my own project.

What can you learn from their approach?

From their approach I can understand how they utilise distortion in their work. I really like how the zinc panels were chosen for their malleability in creating the twisting elevations.

STORYBOARING ILLUSTRATIONS THAT CAN BE MODELLED WITH CLAY
thumbnail_IMG_0211_edited.png

I used storyboarding as a way to illustrate my process and thinking behind creating the clay models. I wanted to still focus on the concept of "distortion" as there are many possibilities in what I could do.

How does your idea relate to people?

I want this space to be a public and community space that is futuristic, spacious & welcoming. I want both children and adults of all ages to be able to access this space and move freely without any issues.

MODELLING WITH CLAY AND HOW PEOPLE INTERACT WITH THE SPACE

How does your final work from Assignment 2 relate to and involve people?

My culmination for Assignment 2 will take the form of a pavilion coffee area, designed to provide a welcoming environment for customers to order their preferred coffee. Within this space, customers will have the freedom to navigate, place their coffee orders, and subsequently find seating to savor their beverages while enjoying the surroundings.

What could you change or add?

I aspire to incorporate both a designated seating area and a coffee curation space, envisioning these elements as engaging for customers to enjoy. People need a space where they can sit and catch up with their busy lives.  My intention is to offer a diverse range of atmospheric conditions, allowing for the dynamic play of light, time and the influence of weather. This multifaceted approach will provide a more profound understanding of the space and its versatile utility.

Do they need shelter from the elements?

This space will have shelter from the atmospheric conditions. It will have mostly open spaces that will be undercover to allow for a range of weather conditions.

PRECEDENT - DILLER SCOFIDIO + RENFRO'S

Diller Scofidio + Renfro's "surreal and magical" Blue Dream house in the Hamptons is an architectural brilliance. In my design I want to incorporate the structures form and how it seamlessly melds contemporary design with the natural landscape. I found it interesting how the curvaceous lines mimic the rolling waves of the nearby ocean, creating an ethereal sense of movement.

Through my exploration I found that this was the interior form and shape I wanted to focus on most. I found that this design was quite intriguing and also fit the brief of what I wanted the space to be used as.

I used clay to mold this organic and distorted form. I used my thumb to indent the clay. I kept modelling different shapes and forms until I found the best suited option.

MATERIAL TESTING
Image31.png

I focused on testing a variety of materials to find the best combination. Most of the materials I trialed turned out really well and were effective. For my second material iteration, I used the materials of concrete & textured stone. I found that the concrete was too cold and needed some brightness incorporated into it.

Image33.png
Image32.png
Image38.png
Image34.png

For the first material iteration I used the materials of wood, concrete and chrome which ultimately fit really well into the scene I wanted to create. All these materials are quite natural and don't stand out too much when placed in a garden full of greenery in the city.

Image37.png

For my third material iteration I used the materials of concrete, plastic and shiny chrome metal, however, I thought that these materials would be too harsh.

REFLECTION

In Assignment 2, I discovered that incorporating the concept of distortion proved to be beneficial in the ideation process. I was fascinated by the versatility it offered in generating various iterations. I chose the site of a garden in the city as people live busy lives and need a space where they can grab a coffee and relax. You don't usually see many cafes in the location of a park, and I thought that the organic distorted shape fits in well with the surrounding terrain.

However, I did encounter some challenges along the way. One of the main hurdles was defining the precise direction I wished to pursue. Additionally, I faced some difficulties in diversifying my ideas and ultimately settled on a concept. Another aspect that added complexity to the assignment was the need for effective communication. Given the unconventional nature of distortion, I had to really develop and convey my concepts clearly to my audience. Balancing innovation with clarity was an ongoing challenge throughout the project.

The space I've designed is a coffee area situated within the CBD gardens. It caters to people who are passing by or on their work breaks, offering them the opportunity to enjoy a coffee or pastry during their break. Socialization is a central focus in this space as people need to feel welcomed. Over time, the atmosphere in the space undergoes noticeable transformations, influenced by the weather conditions. These shifts in weather contribute to the dynamic character of the coffee area within the gardens.

On sunny days, the space comes alive with the vibrant energy of people enjoying their coffee in the open air and warm sunshine and when it rains, the atmosphere becomes cozy and intimate as customers seek shelter inside, sipping their drinks and engaging in conversations.

Overall, I really enjoyed working on this assignment as I gained many skills in Rhino, Photoshop and Twin Motion. I also was able to understand the process of designing and how iterations and precedents are really beneficial and valuable.
