MATERIALITY

In combination with formal design elements, materials can build on an idea, and give your interior added power. Materials carry their own connotations, and the meaning can vary across ages, cultures, and user demographics. What is calming for one group might have the opposite effect for another, depending on their life experiences and background

TASK 1: CONNECTING POINTS WITH LINES

In class, we worked collaboratively to explore the relationship between point and line using a variety of objects including differnt types of string, cardboard, cable cords & foil. 

As a group we experimented threading string through the holes of the seats to create a series of points and connections.

TASK 2: FORM AND SPACE - ASSEMBLANGE

Form and shape are areas or masses which define objects in space. Form and shape imply space; indeed they cannot exist without space.

 

For Task 2 I experimented by using a variety of materials such a thick string, paper and cardboard and arranged them. I used the process of stacking & piling. I thought about the form I created and focused on the negative space. I wanted to focus on what was forming between the objects.


If you move around the object, you are able to capture a range of different viewpoints which enables the viewer to find the most dynamic and compelling perspective.

Think about the form you are creating, consider negative space. What shapes can you see forming between the objects?


The shapes that I can see forming between the objects revolve around circular organic shapes. In certain parts of the model there are larger areas of negative space.

HOMEWORK: CUTTING, TEARING, REPEAT
For homework I cut and teared pieces of paper from a magazine. I then arranged them on a surface in my house and photographed the process and outcomes.


I then took the pieces of paper and used the techniques of scrunching and wrinkling them to create texture. For one of the images I placed a piece of transparent glass as a lense on top of the scrunched paper to see if it would change or dull the colours.

I then repeated the process of installing them in my interior space and photographed them. The teared-up pieces of paper were photographed on a piece of black paper which contrasted well against the colours whereas the scrunched-up pieces of paper were photographed on a white textured piece of foam.

Edward Weston, an influential American photographer, revolutionized the history of the medium with his innovative techniques in composition, lighting, and form.

ABSTRACT FORMS

I ventured off into my home and attempted to photograph objects like my hand, a plastic water bottle & pieces foil scruched.

​

By editing the images in black and white provides an easy and dynamic way to make images look like they belong together and appear more abstract.

CAN YOU PINCH IT INTO SHAPE?

Today we focused on creating pinch pots in class. The process started by rolling a slab of clay into a round ball. I found that the heat from my hands helped mold the clay. I then gently pressed the clay with my thumb and moved around the clay ball in pinching motions so the middle would become hollow.

WORKING WITH CLAY

In class we got to make some quick 3D forms using the material of clay.

​

I found that I could cut out slabs from the block of clay using a thin piece of wire.

HOW IS SCALE PERCIEVED?

The photos that I took of the clay dictate the way we think about your form. In this class I played with scale by making smaller and larger versions of my initial experiments and comparing them to my fingers/hand size.

WILL IT STAY DRY OR WET?

I found that the more I handled the clay the faster it went from wet to dry.

For some of these clay creations, my primary focus was to capture them through photography as if we were stepping inside their captivating realm. This approach serves to instill a profound sense of immersion, transporting viewers into a world of artistic wonder & imagination.

For Week 4 the topic we focused on was "Making patterns". I chose a piece of photography that I had created throughout this course and developed this image into a pattern and experimented with physical and digital software. For the physical aspect I cut up two images into thin strips and created a collage then for the digital aspect I photographed the collage and took it to photoshop to edit the colour, saturation and hue.

I started to experiment with line, colour, media and how they represent time and space, ideas, functional use, intangible atmospheric qualities like smell, damp & sound ect.

FINALLY INTERIOR: find a work that speaks to your idea of interior, and how is a sense of space, atmosphere, time etc combined to reinforce this? Hint, sets are interiors. But so too could a website be considered an interior. Interpret this in your own way.

ASSIGNMENT 2: 
WEEK 7 - WRAPPING, PHOTOGRAPHING & DRAWING

 For this task I was playing around with wrapping objects and materials to create abstract forms. Some materials that I focused on using included, tape, coloured string, limes, tissue paper and sheer mesh material. All these materials are able to wrap around and stack on forms.

This animation allowed for me to explore distortion through digital work. I found that for my concept using abstract & organic forms would work best.

I acknowledge and pay respects to Woi Wurrung and Boon Wurrung language groups of the eastern Kulin Nations, whose land I learn, share and grow on.
