In Assignment one, I explored the concepts of Malleability and distortion by easily shaping a molding piece of foil into abstract forms.

In Part 02, I want to develop the theme of distortion through the transformative experience the foil goes through.

BRAINSTORMING IDEAS

I was a bit unsure on where to go from part 01, so I decided to brainstorm and flesh out some ideas that stood out to me.

DEVELOPMENT THOUGH POTENTIAL FORMS

Developing forms out of photoshopped images of foil on procreate. This allowed me to experiment with a range of tools such a warping and distorting. These experiments inspired my design creation.

DISTORTING FOIL & CREATING MODELS

RHINO EXPERIMENTATIONS

I started to create and experiment with some forms in RHINO to figure out which form suited the concept of Malleable and distortion best.

I focused on communicating intangible aspects of my interior, such as time, light, atmosphere & sound.

I Documented various states of change and development. For example, what was happening inside/around and outside the space. Overtime the interior changes with the weather, seasons & atmosphere.

PRECEDENTS
RICHARD SERRA- PRECEDENT

Richard Serra was an American artist who created large scale sculptures using heavy metal. His process was bending, curving and arranging piece of metal to make massive artworks. He wanted to understand how people interacted with his installation.

MATERIAL TESTING

Material testing with:

01. Grey Concrete

02. Grey Stone

03. Gold Textured Aluminum

04.Blue Aluminum

I used RHINO to create my interior using the concepts malleable and distortion.

I then used twin motion to realistically render the model aswell as the atmosphere.

ANISH KAPOOR - PRECEDENT

Anish Kapoor is a British-Indian Sculptor known for his large-scale work related to perception and space. Anish's project "Mirror Series" are mirror like sculptures that distort and warp reflections, creating a sense of instability.

REFINEMENT - REFLECTION

Overall, I navigated through this assignment quite easily. Researching precedents in my exploration page played a significant role in accelerating my progress and understanding. Throughout the refinement stage I could finally see the work coming together. I occasionally encountered challenges in terms of refining my concept, however, I managed to overcome them by generating a range of iterations. Looking ahead, my goal is to refine and narrow down my ideas and concepts related to malleability. and distortion.

DIGITAL TIME

Add a heading (5).gif

For the digital phase of Assignment One Part 02, I realised I needed to define my interior more closely and start building on my renders and animations.

I brainstormed and developed my interior through some key words:

- Futuristic

- Welcoming

- Pavilion

- Malleability

- Distortion

- Abstract

- Organic

DIGITAL MODELS RELATING TO THE CONCEPT: MALLEABLE + DISTORTION

Image25.png

I chose textured silver aluminum for the final concept because it aligns well with the ideas of distortion, malleability, and the form developed in RHINO.

By incorporating the human figures into the image enhances its realism. It also reveals the scale of the model and how it meshes with the environment.

DIGITAL TIME - REFLECTION

I really enjoyed working on the digital aspect of the assignment. It was fascinating to make renders and animations that focused on the atmosphere, connecting with time, seasons, and weather.

I successfully maintained my focus on the concept of malleability and distortion without falling off track. I had a clear understanding of my intentions and how to effectively present them in my work. I developed skills in RHINO and employed various tools including the 'twist' tool, to achieve the curved shape that allows the viewers to interact. Additionally, I also developed skills in twin motion, using it to render the model with diverse materials and animate a range of images to create a video/animation.

Looking ahead, I'm eager to expand my knowledge by delving into other digital modeling and animation software. I believe that acquiring these skills will offer numerous benefits and broaden my skill set in valuable ways.
